I am very sorry but I just had a dream about Phantomland last night and I feel an obligation to let you know. you had just drawn a panel where Chie was fighting a bunch of ninjas on top of some vaguely East Asian building. however, you as the author sought to make this arc a more interactive and 3D experience and you stabbed me (the reader) with a samurai sword. the experiment was successful as I swear I felt actual pain in the dream but I bear you no ill will and still love your comic.

It’s actually a direct homage to b&b. Amber is the candle and Elias is the clock. Jon will slowly turn into a possum

In recent years I’ve been into some wild comics…. like not the gratuitously gory/porny stuff necessarily, I just like to be shocked and intrigued. Maybe because I’m dead inside and it’s hard to get a reaction out of me :D So I want to take Phantomland to that direction. Lots of hurtin’ ahead for many characters but I draw the line at sexual violence, that’s too dark even by my standards

Yeah Jon has lost/damaged a part of his brain. I was inspired by those stories about people who bust their heads and it changes their personalities (like… some serial killers…). It explains some of his behavior but it won’t be used as an excuse for the evil shit, I promise it’s more complicated/interesting than that.

Yeah, I got the dayjob and immediately had to freeze all personal projects so I could focus on making a good impression at the company (worth it, they do seem to like me!). Took me two years but I’ve finally gotten my life arranged in a way where I’m able to draw a webcomic again. I really missed drawing it too!

At first I thought Jessie’s canon hairstyle was too silly and I just didn’t wanna draw it haha. So I turned it into a braid and ended up changing the rest of the designs as well, I wanted them to look more casual but still recognizable. Btw, for people wondering: I wrote “after 20 years” but I don’t actually mean they’re 20 years older. Cartoon characters don’t age… at least Ash doesn’t

This sort of “loose interpretation” fan art (here’s another, and here) is actually really fun to do and I hope I’ll draw more of it sometime :)

Really? Sorry, I must’ve missed that one somehow. I answered a similar question a couple years ago though

I’m super flattered someone would ask me of all people for story advice, haha. I guess a good rule-of-thumb is to establish WHAT IS YOUR STORY ABOUT??? Focus on a theme and build the characters and plot around it. Have your characters WANT something. Figure out whether they’ll reach their goals and how.

With Phantomland I went for a story about a young awkward girl who’s got a lot to learn, because that’s easy to relate to. Chie’s stuck in a world of dangers and mean people, her #1 concern is to survive and look for a way out. So when writing each episode I basically ask myself, “what kind of horrible trauma will Chie suffer this time???” “in what clever way will these characters shit on Chie’s hopes and dreams???”

I don’t know, it’s complicated. I could ramble about the topic all night but I’m tired. I hope these points helped you even a little bit, if you have more specific questions I’m happy to answer! You could also google for that list of Pixar’s storytelling tips, it’s quite good as well
