You are amazing and you write amazing comics, so you have GOT to have amazing taste in comics as well (hopefully). Are there any comics you can recommend?

Garfield

Thank you anon, I’m very flattered but TRUTH BE TOLD I’m not as big of a comics nerd as I probably should be. I read a bit of manga once in a while because it’s convenient (cough… internet…), also I’ve lately been more immersed in books/games/tv series

But here’s a couple good titles I recommend!

  • Shingeki no Kyojin - read it ASAP, the fandom is at it’s peak! Creepy shit, intense action & badass ladies A+
  • Dorohedoro - cool weird setting with the coolest weirdest characters
  • Peepo Choo - I wrote about it
  • Pluto / Monster / 20th Century Boys - Naoki Urasawa has a knack for creating very real and sympathetic characters
  • Emma / Otoyomegatari - cute love stories with costume porn and gorgeous women
  • Vinland Saga / Historie - if you like historical settings these are pretty enjoyable
  • Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - the most serene and happy thing

For western comics I can’t think of much to recommend besides the obvious classics like Maus and Watchmen… yeah I’m sorry for my ignorance :(

For Finns I recommend works by Jyrki Nissinen (Borgtron, etc) because that guy is a comedy genius

ok this is gonna be really embarrassing but as i was looking through your blog i started to bawl because of all of the amazing things you said defending your views and feminism as a whole. i'm always too scared to stand up to anyone and i just really admire your toughness and intelligence! you've been one of my biggest inspirations since probably 2010 and seeing your art makes my heart flip flop around too. aah. anyway i think you're incredible! have a nice day! ;u;

Awww don’t cry poor baby ////;;

Hahaha truth be told I don’t see myself as particularly tough; I tend to keep my head down and avoid conflicts as much as possible, but… I figure some things are more important than my comfort level, and some things are worth saying no matter how much shit I might get for it! Luckily I have followers who are lovely supportive darlings such as yourself :)

In any case thanks for writing your message, it made me really happy! I’m glad you dig my artwork as well ahhhh such kind words

How do you come up with character designs? Do you start from character's personality or appearance when designing them?

Hmmm that’s a good question! Long reply incoming…

Personality and appearance go hand in hand with me when I draw characters. Even when it’s a throwaway image of a throwaway character, I still like to imagine a personality for them and try to express it somehow. It’s one of the reasons I don’t do commissions; if I’m not familiar with the personality of the requested character, I feel really lost when trying to draw them :I

I have a background in comics so I tend to make my character designs fairly simple and practical but aim for a sort of “iconic" mix of shapes and colors; meaning that if someone were to cosplay the character, I should be able to recognize them instantly. A generic t-shirt + jeans combo won’t do (unless the palette is really good). There needs to be some kind of idea that makes each character stand out.

There’s the question of whether you want your character to look very “obvious" or not. People associate glasses with traits like intelligence, kindness and maturity, for example - but what if you had this glasses-wearing character who’s really ignorant, graceless and violent? What if the valley girl covered in glitter turned out to be the most strong and virtuous member of the group? I think a lot about that, about what impressions certain details give to the audience, and how I’d mess around with those impressions to create something interesting.

Phantomland has really straightforward designs though! Everyone looks 100% their type - innocent girl, tough guy, nerdy guy, mischievous gal, classy lady, etc etc. It’s intentional because I don’t want to confuse the reader at square one; I want them to glance at each new character and instantly know what to expect. Not that I don’t plan to betray some of those expectations, of course ;D

That said it’s been many years since I created the majority of my characters, and some of the designs strike me as quite boring now haha……

I just noticed that Jon has this wrist-watch. For some strange reason I got the feeling that it has some sort of deeper meaning to his character... pretty sure I'm wrong, though.

Good observation but nah, he’s just oldschool :D also it’s p much the only accessory he can wear without looking out of character

Ehhh I really don’t feel like replying but I guess I can’t ignore such a long message either….
• You’ve never been uncomfortable with female characters? Good for you.
• Female sidekicks and love interests can be cool characters per se, but it doesn’t...

Ehhh I really don’t feel like replying but I guess I can’t ignore such a long message either….

  • You’ve never been uncomfortable with female characters? Good for you.
  • Female sidekicks and love interests can be cool characters per se, but it doesn’t negate the alarming lack of female protagonists. Your examples are the same handful that’s brought up in every conversation - games with female-only protags still make up only 3%. So yes, we need more female heroes and stories told from a female POV. Here’s one reason why they matter. Granted Japanese games have a slightly better track record on this, but they’re guilty of some skeevy crap as well.
  • Chie is not white. Yes, she’s a timid rookie dealing with dangerous people. I don’t see a problem here.
  • What’s slut-shaming got to do with any of this? I have nothing against ladies wearing sexy outfits as long as it’s consistent with their personality. It makes sense for Isabela (Dragon Age II) and Bayonetta who are both promiscuous and sexually assertive characters. The problem here is that a rough estimate of 90% of female characters do dress in revealing outfits, and they do that FOR NO REASON other than the designer wanting something to masturbate to. And then the camera will be programmed to zoom up the character’s ass without her awareness. Yippie-fucking-doodle-doo that sure feels empowering

So no, I can’t say that I agree with most of your points ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: lots of edits, sorry. I just got out of bed and am struggling with my English agghh

You said that you're interested in working in video game industry. What job in it interests you most? Level designer, character designer, screenwriter, something else?

It’s hard to tell what my strengths will be since I’m only beginning to study 3D animation :D

I suppose I’ll most likely start off doing artwork. I want to make games that look SUPER COOL…  Character design & animation in particular seem like fun jobs, though who knows what I’ll end up doing once I actually find myself in a studio. Might study a bit of programming as well if I get the chance

OMG MAARIA LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT HEDGEHOGS I LOVE HEDGEHOGS they are making threatening sounds at each other, they are probably both male and are trying to tell the other "YOU DON'T WANNA MESS WITH ME I BE TOUGH SHIT". Notice how they keep aiming their spiky sides and forehead at each other now and then? It's because if the other attacks, it won't get to bite the sensitive face and other such areas but only meets the protective spikes. Hedgehog-sensei out!

Hahaa I figured it must be something like that. There you have it, ladies and gents o/

Hey, I just wanted to say that I'm completely in love with your OCs and their dynamic in your comic! I'd be really curious to hear what characters you like in other fandoms... maybe you could give me your top 10 guys and gals? Whys and wherefores optional.

Thank you! Always makes my day to know my OC’s are appreciated <3<3

Aahhh it’s so hard to pick favorites though! I rarely obsess about any specific character in fiction… But here’s some good ones in no particular order! Not surprisingly most of them are from cartoons. Not that I don’t like live action characters too, but I guess flesh people just don’t stand out to me as much??

Ghosts are physically stronger than average humans, right? So, are they more resilient to diseases?

Yeah they’re stronger, and I’d figure their genes are different enough from regular humans that they aren’t burdened by the same diseases. Who knows though, maybe I’ll end up writing a chapter where they catch the common flu against all odds :D could be funny

Anonymous asked:

Is it possible to extract the virus from ghost's body and inject it to a normal person, thus creating "artificial" ghost?

Hmm I’ve been thinking if a blood transfusion would have that effect, but I’m not sure yet!

Even if that sort of thing was possible it must be very tricky and dangerous to pull off. There aren’t too many people willing to experiment anyway :D

Anonymous asked you: What kind of games does Elias play? Or is he the type that will try out any game that looks interesting enough?

He strikes me as the type who’s a hardcore strategy game and Pokemon nerd but will play other genres too

Is the Mononokehime-fanart available as print in any of the upcoming finnish conventions? I'd love to buy one <3

Yeah, I plan on making new prints this summer/fall! Thanks for your interest <3 I won’t have a table at Desucon but I hope I’ll get one at Tracon

EDIT: I’ll be at Finncon as well but not sure if I’ll get prints that soon!
