foervraengd asked:

Not sure if you've answered this one before but yeah, did you study swedish in school or is that optional in finland?

Swedish is still mandatory as far as I know…? Jag var alltid jätte dåligt på svenska and they teach us Finland Swedish, the local dialect which is completely useless if you ever planned to talk with a native Swede :—D But I can read some of the signs when I visit Stockholm so that’s nice

My our name is Maria too?!?!?!?

I’m not kidding this is like the fifth time someone on the internet goes “omg your name is Maria?????”

  • First of all, Maria is one of the most common names in the world so I don’t get what you guys are so excited about
  • Secondly my name is not Maria, it’s Maaria. It’s Maaria on every single online profile I’ve got. Yes it’s based on the same biblical figure but it’s an old Finnish variation that’s spelled and pronounced differently

Probably sounds like nitpicking but I’m sure many people out there understand how annoying it gets to have your name constantly misspelled and mispronounced by others… even other Finns tend to have problems with my name despite it being so simple, sigh

A thought just struck me. Has it ever happened that when somebody catches the Ghost virus, the victim's family tries to hide it? That they keep the patient hidden in order for him/her not to be taken to Cypress?

Typically they can’t tell it’s the virus because the person will just appear dead for a few days. Pathologists know what’s up and they have a secret pact to send all the infected bodies to Cypress, while the family receives autopsy results like “heart attack” or somesuch and proceed to have a funeral with a dummy in the coffin.

I guess sometimes people might stumble upon the truth, but reuniting with a ghostly family member tends not to work out too well! Eventually Cypress will seem like a perfect summer camp to dump your creepy amnesiac kid into

What kind of screentones do you use in Phantomland? They look so good. I've tried to make some screentones with Photoshop but they totally suck.

Haha well I’m glad you like them, though honestly my way of doing this probably ain’t the smartest

For clothes and other stuff I use a range of solid grays that I run through the grain filter. HOWEVER since it’s a dense cluster of pixels it can come out as a black mess in print unless you really know what you’re doing (1200dpi offset printing and prayers) so I don’t actually recommend this for anyone!

image

For shading I use this simple pattern. Smart people would use only variations of this, only it’s hard to put two patterns on top of each other without causing the ever-annoying Moiré effect so I’m instead combining this with the grain stuff to get a wider range of shades

You told that regular people have many differnet opinions about ghosts and their role in society, but does that apply to ghosts, too? Are there radical groups that believe that ghosts shouldn't even try to blend into society and instead aim to spark a kind of revolution to make them "the master race"?

Haaa that’s a good question, thanks!

I suppose they could be a glorious “master race” in theory since they’ve got all these physical advantages over the regular populace. Everyone’s aware of this, but it’s obviously a dangerous idea to talk about and many ghosts will reject it to begin with. Ghosts are a small minority and the government could easily wipe them out if they got too cocky!

poems-and-madness-deactivated20 asked:

this is literally the first time I've ever heard about this blog or you as an artist. So knowing this, could you please get me up to date on what you are about or better put what stuff you draw, what i can expect from your page. But also what is this comic thing I see you have posted about? what comic?

Hey, thanks for following! I assumed the front page of my blog would’ve been informative enough, but well… :D

I mostly make posts about my original stuff, for example my super rad comic project Phantomland which is available both in paper and webcomic format. Give it a shot if you’ve got the time!

Sometimes I draw fanart though my subject matters tend to be irregular and unpredictable. Currently my favorite series are Shingeki no Kyojin, Adventure Time and ASOIAF/Game of Thrones I think. Later this fall I’ll probably go nuts about Kill la Kill if it turns out as good as I hope!

How did you come up with idea for Phantomland's story, world and characters? Were things different back then? And have characters changed in any ways from when you first planned them?

Good question, thanks!

I think the original idea was that if I’m gonna draw such a big project, naturally it should be something cool & entertaining so I just proceeded to slap together some of my OC’s and a bunch of story elements that I personally found interesting. Out came a world of uniforms and fighting, basically :D Writing an action-heavy thing about regular people would’ve been too limiting so I came up with the ghost virus, too. Things kinda evolved from there and the overarching drama and conflict ended up being mostly about this special minority of people and their role in society

Most of the characters haven’t changed all that much from my first drafts. The chief I originally designed to be male but changed at the last minute. Such a good decision though! Jon started off as a somewhat talkative type with witty remarks, but those traits seemed to suit Elias better, so I turned Jon more blunt and simple to balance that. Overall I haven’t been changing things so much as expanding them from where I started, like character dynamics, and how the virus works, and the politics and history of the city

But yeah, these things I actually explain in better detail in the bonus pages of the print version :)

Do you have any favorite games?

Yes! Here’s a few titles I’m fond of

  • Final Fantasy 9
  • Portal
  • ICO & Shadow of the Colossus
  • Metal Gear Solid 3
  • God Hand
  • Cave Story
  • Psychonauts
  • Silent Hill 2
  • Journey
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddyssee & Exoddus

Overall I seem to be most interested in experimental/artistic games, horror games and Dorky Japanese Action Games ™

Atm I’m playing Persona 4 and Deadly Premonition aaaand I have a huge pile of potentially awesome games on my PS3 that I haven’t had the time to play yet :(
