Jon is totally sending a message to Chie with his moles. You know, something like the magic coins in Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix. Chie's moles will turn into text that says "HELP ME DAMN BRAT I'M FUCKING DYING" Rossini can read it for her. And then Chie can save Jon with her hidden special powers.
Goddammit how do my readers keep accurately predicting every plot twist I write
Maaria, I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't read phantomland yet (I have a bad habit of waiting for series to go on before I catch up so I won't run out any time soon. I do love everything you draw!) BUT everytime you post an update, the little preview pictures slay me. I just laughed 5 minutes straight at the gimme gimme gimme. You are amazing.
Judging by the previews I wonder what kinda weird-ass impression people get of the comic hahaha…. I’m glad you find those entertaining though, thanks. Read the real deal when you feel like it!
Where did you learn to draw and set up comics like you do? Did you take a class or something?
How to comics:
- read good comics
- figure out why they’re good
- draw comics
- (when in doubt read a Scott McCloud book)
I actually went to a school (Orivesi college of arts) for a year to study comics, but at that point I already knew the essentials and it was pretty much an excuse to spend a gap year drawing stuff. Honestly anyone can draw comics, you don’t need a certificate to do it. How to draw a comic that’s readable though, that’s where you’ll make tons of mistakes and need to listen to criticism
maariamph , i enjoy reading really truly shitty comics. does it help to figure out why they’re shit and then dont do that thing?

Yes that… that works too. It can help a lot. But you want your own comic to be better than “not shit”! Remember to read excellent comics as well to keep your standards high

how do you do the layout process in your comics? thank you for the AMA.

Hey no problem! Here’s thumbnails for these two pages. It’s a Photoshop file with a chapter’s worth of blank spreads that I fill in as I go. Drawings are on a separate layer so I can easily move things around with the lasso tool, or add more panels in between, or scrap them, or change their size or whatever
I’ve made this as convenient as possible for myself because thumbnailing is a pain in the ass, sometimes I spend hours wrestling layouts into shape only to get a page or two completed. And I’m not super fond of this example spread either, I’m like 70% satisfied with it haha. But it’s ok, I’ll just try to make the next ones better. That’s comics for ya
Hey Maaria! I have two questions cuz I'm a curious gal. Firstly, how long do you want phantomland to be in chapters? Secondly, which of your oc's do you relate to the most? Thanks for making such a great comic!
Thanks for your message! This is in the FAQ but yeah, I have material for a very long story although I’m prepared to cut off some of it if necessary. I want to draw at least 10 chapters
Second question is interesting! Many of my characters have flaws or problems I can relate to, it just feels intuitive to write them like that and I think it’s pretty common too. I don’t think any of them is particularly more “me” than others though. Chie is an insecure wuss, Jon is a jaded introvert and Elias is a stuck-up pedant, these three are pretty clear-cut at least
Amber… has flaws too, she’s cheeky and irresponsible but I don’t see myself in her at all. I’m just familiar with her “type” haha, she’s kinda a mix of several people I’ve known in the past
Hi, I really love Phantomland, I think it's great and I just wanted to ask you something: How old are the characters? Just curiosity n.n Really enjoy the comic 😄
Hey, thanks for reading!
I haven’t given them exact ages because Cypress folks don’t have birth records so it’s a mystery anyway. Chie and friends are definitely adults though so if you’re into shipping or whatever… that’s no problem……….
Oh no! Does that means Jon is sensitive to dog whistle?! (by the way, nice latests OC anatomy drawings of Jon. He's pretty fit for someone drinking all the time! I wouldn't mind if he has a bit of belly fat though. <3)
I think most people figured this out - yeah, he can hear ultrasound, but there’s more to it than that they’re playing Abba in high frequency
Pretty fit for someone who smokes! Nothing about his body makes sense really hahaha. It‘ll be acknowledged in canon though
Can you draw more adult Steven?
I’d love to! I love adult Steven. Thing is I need to have a good vision in my head before I can draw it, and those don’t come by very often. I’m really grateful for the reception my art has gotten but I can’t make any promises, sorry!
I thought that I'd butt in a bit, I've been following your comic since 2011 maybe? You and Leppu lived together then I think? Anyway I was fanatically invested in the first two volumes of this thing. It was the comic that made me gain confidence in self publishing and finnish comic scene in general, which I absolutely loathed back then. You made me think that my own story projects might one day be possible. You and Leppu are two out of three in my holy trinity of senpaidom, I adore your work.
Oh my goodness that’s so flattering to hear, being an actual senpai to someone. Thank you!! Those were the times eh? Tell you the truth I started drawing Phantomland basically because at the time there was a lot of this anti-manga attitude going around which fueled some kinda fighting spirit in me to try to prove that Finns can draw good manga. Dunno if I proved much, it’s not like manga haters would give my work a chance to begin with haha
But truly, nothing’s stopping you from drawing a comic and bringing your stories to life! If you have a pen and paper you can start right away, think about that! Never hesitate, just work!! Good luck with your project kind anon!
How do you feel about people shipping your characters and making fan art and such?
Go ahead

Has there been another situations where someone said your Character looked like X from Y show? Would you share? or does it really bother you?
Good question. Not a lot really! One time someone said Jon looks like Ginko from Mushishi and I don’t mind because Ginko is great.

A few times I’ve heard that Elias is like Hughes from FMA but it’s actually a pet peeve because both wear glasses + uniform and that’s where the similarities end also that is the worst ahoge I’ve seen

Advice though: if you ever think an artist’s work resembles another artist’s work, DON’T tell them (unless it’s literally ripped off and needs that criticism). You may think it’s a compliment but most artists don’t appreciate it. They want to be viewed as their own person, not a knock-off of someone else.
Have you ever done any NSFW comics? If you haven't then do you think about doing it?
Porn is fun to draw and I think I’m pretty good at it. I don’t value that stuff at all though, to me it’s just cheap & disposable and I usually get rid of it. So yeah I draw it once in a blue moon but the chances of you guys seeing it are very low (・_・)
Sex scenes in a non-porn context can be kinda interesting though. Phantomland might have a couple of those in the future
