Nov 12, you posted draw this again. Would you mind trying to tell main reasons why you feel like 2014 is better for you? Why so much change in style? I'm trying to analyze your style and not in anyway disrespect you.

Interesting question, thanks. 08 version I made simply to demonstrate technical skill and it’s already decent enough that I didn’t need to improve the pose or anatomy a second time. In the 14 version I figured I should tackle the design aspects instead. Don’t get me wrong, I still like cel-shaded anime stuff but doing it a third time might’ve been dull (or maybe not??? Maybe I’ll have to try once again haha)

Basically I feel 08 and 14 are both alright drawings but 14 shows progress in character design, colors and composition. Those are super important for an artist to learn but I guess they’re harder to recognize, what with being more subjective than a standard “how do body parts work” type of thing

Thank you anon, that’s super kind of you! I’m hoping to make this a productive and inspired year as well. Glad to know someone looks forward to it.

Oh I love those "Draw this again" pictures. I don't know, it's some kind of weird fetish. Love to draw them too. I vaguely remember that someone told you the 2002 version looked better? When you posted that 2008 remake on DA? Was it just some weeaboo or did more than one people say that? :D

Eeeh there’s always someone who likes the old version better, but that’s alright… I guess some people tend to be most impressed by intricate details or realistic anatomy because those things require practice and discipline. Useful stuff to learn but I don’t think they make everything awesome by default; it’s not the tools but how you use them, etc.

Hi. Are you a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist? I've been following your comic since the first page and i remember that your drawings reminded me of those of Arakawa-sensei. I think that's what called my attention at first. Your amazing drawings! Then i got into the comic and i could see your own, awesome style; I started to know the characters and i realized i was completely lost. I just want you to know that i really really really admire you very much.

Not the first time I’ve been asked this haha… but yes! I was a loyal reader of FMA during it’s entire run and it made a huge impression on me. It’s really fun and charming but also dark and serious, I enjoy that kind of mix when it’s done right, and I suppose I’m aiming for the same feel with Phantomland.

But thank you, I’m really glad you can appreciate my work for it’s own merits! Thanks for sticking around as a long-time reader and of course look forward to future updates! :)

Hiii, how'd you react if somebody draw porn comics with Jon? Because he looks kinda hot in the flashback... >3<

I used to feel uncomfortable about Phantomland porn but nowadays I’m more flattered by it than anything! So yeah, LISTEN TO YOUR HEART BRAVE ANON AND DRAW ALL THE SMUT IT YEARNS FOR. I hope you’ll show it to me!

Have you watched Silent Hills PT (playable trailer)? I tried, and stopped after 2 minutes. It was just too scary. :(

Yeah, I don’t have a PS4 yet so I watched some playthroughs. I loooved it, especially the endlessly looping corridor, that’s the kind of weird shit I like the most in horror. Probably would’ve shat my pants at the jumpscare lady if I’d played it myself though, haha. I’m really looking forward to the game!

Is it too unrealistic if I want to draw a comic that includes maybe three stories or "parts", and each are about 10 tankoubons long? So the whole thing would be 30+ tankoubons. And maybe publish it, or at least make it a web comic? I'm mentally ill to the point I might never get a job, so you could say I have lots of free time. Unfortunately, the illness also makes me tired and I can't stay up very late. Why couldn't I have been born in Japan?!! So does this sound totally stupid and impossible?

image

Hi! Since you’re a complete stranger I can’t make any judgements on your character or work ethic, but 30+ books for a newcomer sounds way over-the-top! Do you absolutely need to make it that long or could you crop it into something shorter to maybe continue later if you feel like it? I suggest you at least draw a couple short stories first, it’ll help you figure out what your strengths/weaknesses are and what kind of graphic style suits you best.

I had no clue if there was any “demand” for Phantomland, what with Finland being a country of realistic comics about banal things - but I started drawing anyway because fuck it, I love my baby even if no one else does. Don’t draw a comic with the aim to gain a big audience. Big audience most likely won’t find you, even if you’re terrific. Especially when it’s a long project you draw it for yourself first and foremost. It might take a while, it might take years, but if your stuff is great and you put tons of love into it, someone will appreciate it eventually.

Also no no no no comics in Japan are a bunch of stressful inhuman bullshit, nothing glorious about it (as far as I’ve been informed). On top of that you’d have to deal with an editor who may force you to change your story entirely. Just stick to webcomics, you’ll have complete creative freedom and the best shot at getting noticed. I must repeat though, don’t get too dependent on attention because it can ruin your motivation.

This all might’ve sounded discouraging but yes. Draw your comics. Since you live in a socialist wonderland it’s technically possible to pursue whatever crazy dream you have without starving from it. So go for it! START NOW. Don’t worry about being “ready”, just get to work. Don’t make your 80yo future self regret a thing that never happened. Good luck anon!!

Kaoru Mori's "Bride's story" will be published in Finnish in july. What's your opinion on this? I'm looking forward to it!

Yeah I… kinda plan to buy a copy and have it autographed at Animecon……

I just hope the print quality is okay so I won’t have to buy the English edition instead

If Chie and others were from real-world countries, what would be their nationalities?
  • Chie: Japan
  • Jon: Finland
  • Amber: France
  • Elias: UK
  • Alex: Sweden
  • Chief: Germany
  • Nadia: Russia
  • Jasper: Estonia

Actually I was planning to draw a picture of everyone dressed as national stereotypes but I dunno how tasteless that might’ve been after all haha

Hi! I just finished reading "Phantomland FAQ" and "ask maaria" tags and came to conclusion that you draw on A4 and your images are 1200dpi lineart and published comic is A5. Do you've a scanner with ability of scanning pics with 1200dpi OR do u use magic? In case of using magic, could you reveal something? I myself like drawing A4 comics but since my scanner can do only 600dpi scans turning them into bitmaps with 1200dpi makes pics awfully small, from A4 to A6.. Thank you for your answer! ;3;

Thanks for your message! I’m glad that you read my posts and they were somewhat useful to you, haha

Hmmm print resolution stuff is really simple but kinda difficult to explain… DPI, Dots Per Inch is not image size but rather the way the image will fill the paper in print. 1200DPI means the printer will use 1200 pixels of your image to fill the length of one inch on paper. Now if you don’t have enough pixels in your image it’ll just get crammed into a tiny space. So you need more pixels - make the pic larger. (In fact don’t measure your image size in pixels to begin with; change the units to millimeters in whichever software you use)

Note: super-sharp 1200DPI is meant for black&white bitmap art and printed with an industrial offset machine. If you’re doing color or grayscale art, 300DPI is the standard resolution for both home and industry printing

My scanner is not magic, I scan my pages in A4 600dpi and then convert them to A5 1200dpi. It’s literally the same amount of pixels :)

What does the Finns generally think of Sweden/Swedes? What do you think of them?

Our stereotype of the Swede is an annoyingly cheerful and vain neighbor, haha… I suppose it stems from the fact that Finland had to fight off Russia in WWII while Sweden was never under threat, so they’ve enjoyed a time of peace and progress longer than us which has turned them “soft”

But even if we get dead-fucking-serious about beating Sweden in every sport and contest imaginable, most Finns actually think warmly of Sweden and Swedes. We have so many things in common after all. Personally I’d love to revisit Stockholm sometime soon and go to some local anime conventions as well :)

Is Finland nice? What's the common language?

Finns speak Finnish although 5% come from a Swedish-speaking family

That’s a tough question though isn’t it? I’ve never lived outside Finland so I speak from a limited perspective but overall I doubt I could be happier anywhere else. It’s a great home for bohemian types because socialist government provides free education and a whole bunch of safety nets. Good for introverts as well since social etiquette is all about quality over quantity (i.e. we don’t do small talk or chat up strangers in public)

It’s a country with a depressing culture and long winters; it’s not for everyone but it’s perfect for me

As a Black person, that comment didn't offend me in the least. In fact, I'd say that was a compliment. even still, I don't understand why you would be called a racist. Nothing you said was hateful. The thing is, opinions on tumblr gets rolled over and name calling is quick. Again, nothing you said was wrong, but you'll have to pick and choose what you want to say when it comes to sharing your opinion here whether it's positive or negative (it's sad really).

Alright, thanks for your input!

I was a little weirded out by the accusation but then again what do I know? I’ve said and done shitty things before without realizing it so I figure the smartest thing to do is to ask someone to explain what’s up. It’s much easier than insisting that I’m faultless, anyway
