chimthecappy asked:

that persons dumb but yeah, a lot of healthy food over here is way more expensive that the gross prepared stuff. for me, fruit is a rare treat. it seems like steven fends for himself pretty often, which is gonna leave him with a lot of 'instant' foods that taste good, but arent very good for you. it would be great to show steven making healthier choices, to help show younger veiwers how to do the same. but while steven is a everyman... or boy, i guess, he probably will stick with american gunk

Huh, thanks for your input! So apparently some portion of Americans are so deep in the fast food trap that over the years it’s genuinely become the “new normal” while unprocessed foods are meant for the privileged folk. And it gets to the point where people expect even their cartoon characters to snack on donuts by default, because apples or carrots would seem too implausible?

I don’t pretend to know how this kind of complex issue is solved but I do think it needs solving. I hope your politicians will take an interest in it sometime

  1. lacrimode said: the politicians here will never be interested in it, so it’ll probably take the american people to make any change honestly

  4. squidnarcs said: It’s not that fast-food is the new normal, it’s that privileged people have the time and resources to buy unprocessed food and make meals for themselves/their families. For many lower income individuals/families, they unfortunately don’t

  7. nabexis said: Not to mention all of the aftermath photos saying “look how much you can get with the food stamps” and it was all processed crap that has little to no nutritional value–but it keeps forever and you can buy it in bulk for an extremely low price.
  8. nabexis said: America’s messed up. healthy foods are so expensive that a celebrity was LAUGHED AT when she tried to do the “food stamps challenge” and bought only healthy food–which wasn’t nearly enough for her two adults two children family for an entire week.
  9. piemancer said: Oh, this is both an interesting and sad topic in the US. A lot of places here are what are referred to as ‘food deserts’ and if you want to check it out google that phrase to learn more about why the US has these.
  10. sakuraingrace said: fresh fruits, veggies, and meats are usually double the cost of frozen meals or pre-packaged foods in the US. It’s also hard for those who only want to feed one or two people per meal. Everything is made to be bought in bulk and for a a lot of people
  11. cesoirvert said: Many people also eat processed foods because 1) they are shelf-stable, 2) they are often given out at food pantries, or in school children’s state-subsidized lunches, and 3) they are much, much cheaper than fresh fruits/vegetables, 4) food deserts
