Dinkie’s sleep pattern is getting unpredictable. He used to fall asleep at 8pm sharp but lately it’s been kinda arbitrary. Just now he woke up at midnight for a second and went right back to sleep. What the fuck Dinkie. Don’t even joke about forcing mama into a whole allnighter of your needy shit

that persons dumb but yeah, a lot of healthy food over here is way more expensive that the gross prepared stuff. for me, fruit is a rare treat. it seems like steven fends for himself pretty often, which is gonna leave him with a lot of 'instant' foods that taste good, but arent very good for you. it would be great to show steven making healthier choices, to help show younger veiwers how to do the same. but while steven is a everyman... or boy, i guess, he probably will stick with american gunk
Huh, thanks for your input! So apparently some portion of Americans are so deep in the fast food trap that over the years it’s genuinely become the “new normal” while unprocessed foods are meant for the privileged folk. And it gets to the point where people expect even their cartoon characters to snack on donuts by default, because apples or carrots would seem too implausible?
I don’t pretend to know how this kind of complex issue is solved but I do think it needs solving. I hope your politicians will take an interest in it sometime

Cool use of strawmanning my comments into fatphobia when I never said a word about body weight. But sure, by all means label me classist. Obviously I’m required to have a thorough understanding of a foreign country’s social issues before I’m allowed to make observational remarks about the food in their cartoons
This is what I get for thinking out loud on tumblr, I get OVERWHELMED by the replies oh god there’s just too many. Here’s a couple comments I keep seeing:
“None of the characters know how to cook, so Steven has no options.”
You can eat fruits and veggies raw! Writing-wise there’s literally no obstacle that prevents Steven from eating healthy stuff. Any character could cook - or learn to cook - for any number of reasons. It wouldn’t change any fundamentals of the story. Steven himself can already make pancakes. I also recall some source saying that Pearl’s interested in cooking as an art even if she won’t eat any.
“This is how some people actually live, it’s just realistic.”
Welp, in my country fast food is an occasional thing for most people and eating that stuff every day is considered pretty sad and lazy. I guess it’s kind of a… culture shock… the way the show makes NO comment on Steven’s eating habits, as if it’s completely normal and expected. There’s Connie for comparison, though - she has a really strict diet which is basically a joke about her control freak parents. There’s no middle ground on this show, is there?

I honestly don’t mean to sound condescending about this, everyone should be allowed to eat whatever they like. Hell I’m not a health nut either, I eat candy or ice cream almost every day. I just can’t see a logical reason why the writers/artists feed nothing else but junk to their characters. I don’t think Steven eating an apple or a banana would seem out of character at all, but it just never happens??

Isn’t it a bit curious though just how much there’s junk food in Steven Universe? Almost every episode shows Steven munching on donuts, fries, pizza, pancakes, ice cream, or popcorn, or whatever, but I don’t actually remember if I’ve ever seen him eat a dish of healthy food. Except for that episode where they’re stranded on an island and catch some fish, maybe.
I dunno. Obviously it’s part of Steven’s character that he’s just this happy-go-lucky little kid and everyone can relate to his love of yummy stuff. Buuuut I still have to wonder why there’s such a strong focus on snacks and sweets. I know the stereotype of Americans eating greasy junk for every meal but it’s not actually true, right?? (note: I’ve never been to USA)
So are we just… having some sort of mindset that fruits and veggies are inherently too icky and banal for a children’s fantasy cartoon? Wouldn’t it be kinda new and refreshing if Steven got excited about proper food for once? Like a normal home-cooked dish? Case in point: the anime food tag, anything can look TASTY AS HELL when it’s drawn with love

DAY TWO
Dinkie grows into different forms depending on the stuff you feed him. I keep him on a balanced diet of chicken and burger for maximum protein intake. Nuclear winter will be harsh and my son needs a fat strong body to fight off the mutants trying to steal our rations.
Old OC from a scifi story I think about sometimes. I’d love to draw a short comic if I ever get a few plot things figured out… probably maybe…….
DAY ONE
Dinkie needs a regular game of rock-paper-scissors to prevent his muscles from shriveling up and dying from necrosis. Internet says it’s recommended that he wins 3 out of 5 matches, but that’s a problem because he’s fucking terrible and I win almost every time. So he throws a fit! LOOK HERE I’M NOT GONNA INDULGE YOU WITH ANY BULLCRAP SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE DELUSIONS, LIFE IS HELL AND WHINY BABIES WON’T SURVIVE THE NUCLEAR WINTER WITH THAT ATTITUDE.
I just revived my virtual pet “Dinkie Dino”. Last time I raised this thing was around 1997. Let’s do this. I will report back to you (unless the brat drives me crazy and I give up within 24hrs)

I’m glad no one’s given me shit about it yet, but yeah, it turns out I was KINDA WRONG about Steven wielding Rose’s sword since they’re obviously giving the sword to Connie now. I always just assumed Connie wouldn’t be allowed to fight because she’s a human and it’s too risky.
Really cool though that Steven’s gonna be a shield-user all the way and will probably keep the pacifist approach to everything. Unless the show gets even darker and he ends up attacking someone, I dunno! Looking forward to Stevenbomb 3, something tells me shit will get very real
